Italian Open date announced, health rules set

Organizers of the Italian Open tennis tournament on Monday formally announced that the tournament will take place from September 14, with strict COVID-19 protocols in place.

The new dates are more than four months later than its normal spot on the calendar.

The move was widely anticipated after the Madrid Open was canceled because of fears related to the pandemic. The Italian event will now precede the French Open by two weeks instead of one.

The Italian Open, which is held on clay courts, is a key tune-up event before the clay-court French Open, one of four Grand Slam tournaments.

In a Monday statement to media, sponsors, and other stakeholders, the Italian Open’s main sponsor said the event will be held with COVID-19 protocols in place, including those for social distancing in locker rooms and periodic disinfecting common areas.

The final will take place on Monday, September 21.

The Italian Open normally takes place during the second week in May, but the pandemic required the professional tennis calendar to be reshuffled, with several events suspended or reduced in scope.

The Italian Open plans to return to its normal spot on the calendar in 2021, assuming the pandemic is no longer a threat, with a May 9 start date already set.

Spaniard Rafael Nadal and the Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova respectively won the men’s and women’s championships last year. Nadal went on to win the French Open later in May.

CBA president Yao Ming -excited and nervous- about league resumption

Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) president Yao Ming said he felt both excited and nervous about the league’s imminent resumption on Thursday.

“I’m excited because I have seen the hope and possibility of going back to normal. But at the same time I feel nervous, because there are many factors beyond our knowledge. We are always concerned about some details that we haven’t paid attention to,” Yao said in an interview with China Central Television.

The Chinese basketball icon admitted he still felt apprehensive about the resumption, especially given the new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Beijing over the past few days.

“But I trust my team and all the clubs. As long as we execute as planned, it will be under control in our competition sites,” he commented.

“Some people have concerns. It’s understandable because they take families into consideration, and that’s what we are trying to figure out.”

China’s basketball league is set to resume on Saturday. Qingdao in east China’s Shandong province and the southern city of Dongguan in Guangdong province have been selected as hosts for upcoming matches that will be played behind closed doors.

“We have never experienced it before. But our expectations overshadow anxiety toward some unpredictable challenges,” Yao said.

With many overseas players unable to return due to current restrictions on international travel, more than half of the teams have chosen to play with all-domestic rosters.

“Overseas and domestic players are all participants in the CBA who aim to make the game more spectacular. Overseas players are a part of the league, but not all. What I focus on is the games’ quality,” Yao noted.

The format of competition will see winners of the round of 12 matches and quarterfinals decided through a single game, while semifinals and the final will adopt a best-of-three format.

“From a sporting point of view, lower-ranked teams will get more opportunities,” said Yao.

Despite setbacks faced by Chinese basketball in recent years, Yao said he has unwavering confidence in the “CBA 2.0” initiative, which aims to upgrade the image of the league.

“We need to upgrade our financial and legal system for the league’s sustainable development,” Yao concluded.

Defending champions Guangdong Southern Tigers smashed the Beijing Ducks 101-82 in their last game of the 2019-20 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) regular season for a record-extending 29th straight victory here on Sunday.

“After CBA’s resumption, both of Beijing’s teams had two overseas players in their squads. Our opponents are quite strong, but we are very dedicated,” said Guangdong head coach Du Feng.

From an early 5-0 lead, Hu Mingxuan made consecutive jump shots to enlarge the gap to over 10 points with four minutes remaining in the first quarter where Guangdong led 25-14 after Zhao Rui succeeded in his three-pointer.

Zhao’s unsportsmanlike foul midway through the second quarter gave Jeremy Lin two free throws to narrow the margin to 10 points. Beijing pulled back 40-38 after Lin converted another pair of free throws, but Sonny Weems buried a three-pointer to set it 45-38 before the interval.

Guangdong kept their comfortable margin around 15 points in the third quarter and soared in the final period.

Zhou Peng’s jumper on Weems’ assist helped Guangdong lead at 83-63 before Weems scored later to create a game-high gap of 25 points to extinguish Beijing’s hope to reverse.

“It’s really a tough game. They are the defending champions and a strong team. We still have a lot to improve in our mentality and technical details. We are in a mid-level position, so I always tell players to fight for our best,” said Beijing coach Xie Libin.

Weems notched 19 points, five rebounds and eight assists for Guangdong, while Zhao added 18 points.

Lin and Wang Xiaohui each contributed 16 points for Beijing, whose 11-game winning streak was ended by the regular-season champions. Beijing sits fourth on the standings after the defeat.

A new wave of players to be ushered at Express Football Club

The Red Eagles first secured head coach Richard Wasswa Bbosa who was accorded a three-year contract,a new CEO Isaac Mwesigwa and a communications manager Peter Tabu.

Bbosa and the management confirmed the release of several players, totaling to 18.

Now, the club has looked around the market and poached very well to beef up all the departments with crucial additions of players who are technically gifted.

The nitty gritty of Jjuuko’s transfer remain scanty since the player already had a valid and running contract with Moroccoan side Wydad Casablanca.

Perhaps, all the aforementioned players are subject to further scrutiny with medical examination before the final contracts will be handed and officially unveiled to the public.

Good enough, all these players are ambitious and focused, ready to fight for the treasured Express badge at all times with diligence under all working conditions.

The Express faithful now believes that this is the right squad assembled to compete favourably with the big boys KCCA, Vipers, SC Villa and URA for silverware.

Last season, the Red Eagles finished in 9th position with 31 points from 25 matches as the league was prematurely ended because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

“While it hasn’t been formally called off this year, or postponed, trying to get 16 countries into Australia in the current world, where most countries are still going through COVID spiking, I think it’s unrealistic, or it’s going to be very, very difficult,” Eddings told reporters.

‘Stay inside, stay safe’: Ashwin uses ‘mankad’ moment to ask people to stay ‘inside’ during lockdown

New Delhi | Jagran Sports Desk: Day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day lockdown in the nation to stop the novel coronavirus from spreading, many cricketers supported his decision and urged the public to avoid all ‘non-essential’ travel and practice social distancing.

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also came up with a cheeky post to urge everyone to stay inside their houses during the lockdown.

The 33-year-old cricketer, who has taken 365 wickets in Test cricket, shared a picture of him ‘mankading’ English wicket-keeper batsman Jos Butler in the Indian Premium League (IPL) 2019.

“Hahaha, somebody sent me this and told me it’s exactly been one year since this run out happened. As the nation goes into a lockdown, this is a good reminder to my citizens. Don’t wander out. Stay inside, stay safe! #21DayLockdown,” Ashwin wrote while sharing the picture on his social media accounts.

However, Ashwin had said that he didn’t do anything wrong and he was well within the laws of the game.

Butler was batting at 69 when he got out of the crease at the non-striker’s end and got mankaded by Ashwin. The Rajasthan Royals were 108 for two when Butler got out and with his dismissal, the team collapsed and the Royals lost the match by 14 runs.

Talking about the 21-day lockdown, PM Modi on Tuesday said this is an essential step to fight coronavirus decisively, adding that saving lives is priority as of now.

PM Modi warned that if the citizens don’t follow a complete lockdown for the coming 21 days, the nation will go back 21 years and many families will be devastated.
